William (Bill) Gayle Franklin, a cherished member of his community, passed away on November 29, 2025, at the age of 95, at Rock Creek of Ottawa, Kansas. Born on November 5, 1930, in Mannington, Kentucky, the son of William James and Edith Elizabeth (Butler) Franklin, he grew up in a nurturing environment that shaped him into the dedicated individual he became. He graduated from Nortonville High School in Kentucky before furthering his education with a Bachelor’s Degree from West Texas State.

Bill devoted thirty-six years of his life to serving in the United States Air Force as an aircraft maintenance manager, beginning his military career in the Army Air Corps in 1947, which transitioned to the Air Force in 1948. His service took him through pivotal moments in history, as he proudly served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, ultimately retiring with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (CMSGT) on August 31, 1984. Over the years, he earned numerous accolades, including the United Nations Service Medal and the Bronze Star Award, reflecting his commitment and bravery.

On October 25, 1961, Bill united in marriage to Johnnie Modean Frost in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Together, they built a life filled with love and family. Johnnie predeceased Bill, passing away on January 22, 2010.

Bill leaves behind a loving family, including his daughters Lou Meyer (Jeff) and Angela Mayo (Jody). He was a proud papaw to Trenton Meyer (Madison), Cole Meyer (Kelsie), Blake Meyer (Gina), and Vanessa Westall (David), as well as his seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Don Franklin and Marvin Franklin (Betty), as well as his sister Glenda Martin. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Franklin, his grandson Scott Steven Madden, his sister Sue Knight, and both parents.

In addition to his dedicated service, Bill was passionate about his hobbies. He was an avid animal lover who enjoyed his numerous dogs and cats throughout his life. Well into his later years, he remained active, playing racquetball and handball until the age of eighty-two. Those who knew him will remember his engaging personality; he loved to "talk politics" and was often found listening to talk radio. Bill had a particular fondness for red wine, enjoying a glass a day, claiming it was for his "health", a testament to his spirited outlook on life.

Visitation will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa, Kansas, on December 4, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A graveside service will follow the following afternoon on December 5, 2025, at Wellsville Cemetery, beginning at 2:00 PM.

Bill’s legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication, love for family, and engaging spirit.
