Willa Smith

Willa Smith, born on August 2, 1932, in Hillsdale, Kansas, passed away peacefully in Paola, Kansas, on July 19, 2026, at the age of 93.

Willa’s journey began in the quiet town of Hillsdale, where she was born to Edward and Alma Dalton. Her formative years were spent in Raytown, Missouri. Willa graduated from Raytown High School in 1950, marking the beginning of a life filled with determination, adventure, and dedication to her family.

As a young woman in the late 1960s, Willa moved to California, embracing new surroundings before ultimately returning to her roots; in 1979, she settled in Paola, Kansas, where she lived and built lasting connections in the community for the remainder of her days.

Known for her strong will and vivacious spirit, Willa approached life with a trademark resilience. Those close to her would recognize the motto she often lived by: “get in, sit down, shut up and hold on.” This unwavering determination shaped every chapter of her story.

Willa’s professional life took an adventurous turn as she became an over-the-road truck driver, a rare path for women of her era. Together with her son Will, Willa spent many years traversing the highways, hauling stage equipment for Broadway productions, including the iconic production of Cats. Through this work, she formed deep and enduring friendships with the show crew and was respected for her dedication and camaraderie.

Willa’s creativity was just as remarkable as her tenacity. She loved quilting, indulged in the intricate craft of mini diamond artwork, and never passed up an opportunity to sew or take on a new crafting project. These hobbies brought her joy and also moments of togetherness for her family.

Willa’s heart was her family, whom she cherished above all else. She is survived by her daughter, Kristie (Rick) Johnson, sons, Kevin Smith and Will Smith; as well as her grandchildren, Amanda (Bruce) Martell, Cameron Johnson, Jay Smith, Julee Smith, and Jess Louk. Willa also leaves a rich legacy in her great-grandchildren: Johnson Martell, Olivia Martell, Maryn Johnson, Konlee Johnson, and Lucy Smith.

In loss, she is united with her beloved parents Edward and Alma Dalton; her dear children Jay Smith and Debbie Smith; her brother Larry Hamm; her grandson Lance Hays; daughters-in-law Sonya Smith and Nanette Smith; and son-in-law Bobby Hays. Their memories remain cherished, and their presence felt in the lives of those who loved them.

Willa’s long and remarkable life leaves behind a legacy of independence, hard work, and creativity. Her strength and spirited approach to each challenge she faced have inspired those who knew her and will continue to do so for generations to come.

Cremation is planned with private family services to be held at a later date.
