Verla Alexander, a beloved member of the Ottawa and Franklin County community, passed away on May 8, 2025, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 30, 1936, in Ottawa, Kansas, she was the cherished daughter of Robert and Leta (Triplett) Service.
Verla's remarkable life was characterized by dedication to her family, a robust work ethic, and a deep commitment to her community. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1954 and later pursued further education at Neosho County Community College in Ottawa. Her career included working as a phone operator with Bell Telephone during the late 1950s to early 1960s, with subsequent roles as a homemaker and secretary for Dennis Smith Optometrist in the 1970s to early 1980s. Verla’s love for the land and animals led her to become a rancher alongside her husband, where they joyfully raised Quarter Horses in their beloved Franklin County.
In 1985, Verla was united in marriage to George William Alexander in Ottawa, Kansas. Together, they built a beautiful life until George's passing on October 31, 2011. Verla’s unfaltering spirit is a legacy that will live on through her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Tammy Hudson (David) of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Toni Yates (Jay) of Ottawa, Kansas. Verla also took immense pride in her family, leaving behind six beloved grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren who were a source of joy throughout her life.
Verla was an active member of the Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas, and she had previously been involved with the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Her commitment to her faith was also evident through her participation in Aglow ministries, reflecting her passion for uplifting her community.
Visitation will be held on May 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, both at Grace Community Church, located at 310 East 8th Street, Overbrook, Kansas, 66524.
Verla Alexander will be remembered not only for her contributions to her family and profession but also for the warmth and love she shared with everyone she encountered. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and dedication will undoubtedly remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
