Terry William Drake, a steadfast presence and a beloved figure, passed away at his residence in Ottawa, Kansas, on February 17, 2026. Born on July 23, 1955, in Joplin, Missouri, Terry's life was characterized by his unwavering spirit, unwavering kindness, and the indelible mark he left on those around him.
As the proud son of Harvey M. and Jacquelyn E. (Andersen) Drake, Terry was nurtured with values that shaped him into the compassionate and strong individual that many came to cherish. Terry graduated from Ottawa High School in 1973 where he participated in wrestling, track and field, and football. Terry went on to obtain an Engineering Certificate from Pittsburg Vocational Technical School. He had an entrepreneurial spirit, once owning his own company, Thunder Electronics, showcasing his passion for innovation and determination. He later continued that spirit when he and Jenny Drake started Drake Home Rentals.
Terry was united in marriage with Linda Brotherton on February 7, 1976. After 20 years, they separated and Terry married Jenny Gresham on September 26, 1998. Terry was family oriented and always enjoyed having his family and friends around. He was proud of his children and wanted to show his support in any way he could. Terry was immensely proud of his grandchildren, attending every event he could and always eager to share stories and moments that highlighted their accomplishments.
A man of great wisdom and insight, Terry often shared his philosophy, stating, “It might not work out the way you think, but it will work out!” This belief not only reflects his resilience but also his ability to see potential in everything and everyone. His positivity and encouragement resonated deeply with his family and friends, creating a nurturing environment where dreams could flourish. Those who knew him would often remark on his stubborn yet kind-hearted nature, always serving as a rock for so many individuals in their times of need. Terry was the person who would readily give the shirt off his back, demonstrating a generosity that inspired those he encountered.
Terry spent over 40 years working as an Engineering Technician in aerospace starting at King Radio and remaining with the company as it transitioned to Bendix/King, Allied Signal, and then Honeywell. Terry was involved in several projects throughout the years such as: the Honeywell IMMR for the 747, GPS receiver for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (2006-2009), the GPSR for the NASA Orion Project (2010-2013), GPS receivers for Boeing 747MAX, Boeing 777X, and the Gulfstream G650 business jet (2014-2018), and the GPS receiver for the Embraer Regional twinjet (2018-2019). He received a commendation for work completed on the Night Vision Goggle Project. He retired in 2020.
Terry's passions extended beyond his career. He had a profound love for dogs, which brought joy to his life. He had a unique way of keeping in touch with loved ones, often sending random texts or writing heartfelt notes that demonstrated his thoughtfulness and care. Additionally, Terry found joy in tinkering with various objects, always seeking to understand and improve the world around him.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his children Renea and Jason Sammons, Candice and Jason Dials, Sarah and Robert Mills, Teri and Nicolas Caruthers, Laura and Greg Perry, and Adam Hunt; his grandchildren, Alex and Natalie Johnston Dials, Kole and Jordan Sammons, Kade Sammons, Kamryn and Braden Hoang, Caden Williams, Morgan Dials, Ava Mills, Addalyn Caruthers, Riley Jac Caruthers, Jason Chance Dials, Elizabeth Perry and Harvey Perry; brother, Tom Drake, and his sister-in-law, Diane and many extended family members. Their lives have been enriched by his presence and the values he instilled in them. Though they mourn his passing, they celebrate the legacy of love and kindness he has left behind.
Terry joins his parents and sister, Trudy Drake, who proceeded him in death.
As we remember Terry, we honor a life well-lived—a life characterized by support, generosity, and an unyielding belief in the potential of others. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Cremation is planned with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
