Susan Matilda Harris Auten, born on November 10, 1937, in St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, at North Point Skilled Nursing in Paola, Kansas. She was 88 years old.
Throughout her life, Susan carved out a successful career that showcased her dedication and love for community service. She served as a bookkeeper for First National Bank in St. Joseph for three years. She married Thomas E. Auten and raised her family before transitioning to a role as a childcare provider at Little People's World, where she made a lasting impact for ten years. In addition, she worked in the deli department at Price Chopper for 13 years, becoming a familiar and friendly face to many in the community. Susan also devoted 18 years to the Foster Grandparent Program, where her nurturing spirit profoundly influenced the lives of many children.
A proud member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Paola, Susan was actively involved with the Shamrock Club, Bridge Club, and the Holy Trinity Women's Group, reflecting her vibrant spirit and commitment to her faith and community.
Susan is survived by her beloved daughters, Dorothy (Joe) Barnthouse, Martha (Steve) Carter, and Nancy Kirk; her sons, Joseph Auten and Frank Auten; her brother, Mike Harris; along with 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Frances Harris and Matilda A. Harris, and her son, Steven Auten.
Susan Matilda Auten leaves behind a legacy of compassion, community involvement, and love that will be cherished by all who knew her. Her contributions to her community and family serve as a testament to a life well-lived. She will be greatly missed.
Rosary will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, beginning at 10:30am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Paola. A funeral mass will follow beginning at 11:00am.
