Sondra Kay Gilmore, a beloved educator, devoted family member, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, in Olathe, Kansas, at the age of 81.
Born on July 13, 1943, in Quincy, Illinois, Sondra's journey through life was marked by her passion for teaching and her unwavering love for her family.
A proud graduate of Quincy Senior High School, Sondra’s commitment to education led her to Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in education. Throughout her distinguished career, she inspired countless students as a teacher, specializing in physical education and special education. Her dedication to nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom, as she also served as a cheerleading coach, encouraging teamwork and school spirit among her students.
In 1998, Sondra took a brave leap into entrepreneurship by founding Granny's Schoolhouse in Louisburg, Kansas. For 25 years, she dedicated her heart and soul to this endeavor, fostering an environment where children could learn, grow, and thrive. After a fulfilling career, she retired, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and wisdom.
Sondra’s life was beautifully intertwined with her family. She married her loving husband, Jim Gilmore, in 1980, and together they shared a remarkable bond that spanned 45 years. The joy of her life came from her children and grandchildren; she took immense pride in her role as a mother to her children, Shannon and John, and a grandmother to her two grandchildren, Drew and Jack. Sondra's greatest accomplishments were found not only in her professional life but also in the loving relationships she nurtured within her family.
In her leisure, Sondra found joy in reading and shopping, always seeking the next great story or perfect treasure. Her sparkling spirit and infectious laughter brought warmth to every gathering, and her kindness touched the lives of those fortunate enough to know her
Sondra is survived by her beloved husband, Jim Gilmore; her daughter, Shannon Bryan; and her two cherished grandchildren, Drew Bryan and Jack Bryan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Virginia Thompson, and her son, John Bryan.
Sondra’s light will continue to shine through the hearts of those she loved and who loved her fiercely. As we remember her, let us carry forward her legacy of compassion, dedication, and love.
