Robert "Bob" Penny

Robert “Bob” Penny, born August 7, 1944, in Brownwood, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home in Paola, Kansas, on August 9, 2026, surrounded by his family. Bob lived a life devoted to family, friendship, faith, and hard work—a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a joyful spirit.

Bob grew up in Crane, Texas, where he graduated from high school in 1963. A talented athlete, Bob attended El Paso UT on a football scholarship. His passion for the sport continued as he played football at Odessa College, excelling as both a left tackle and linebacker. These years on the field shaped lifelong values of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance, which imbued every aspect of his life.

It was at Odessa College that Bob met the love of his life, Nancy. The two married in 1965, beginning a partnership defined by devotion and steadfastness. Bob and Nancy made their first home together in Crane, Texas, where he began working for ARCO. Across the years, their journey would take them to new communities and professional chapters—moving in 1976 to San Angelo, Texas, where he met lifelong friends that he went on hunting trips with for over 50 years. Then in 1981 to Chickasha, Oklahoma, where Bob worked for Lear Petroleum as a supervisor overseeing Oklahoma area natural gas, designing and installing pipelines. In 1987, Bob and his family moved to Kansas, where he continued his career at Sunrise Energy. Three years later, they returned to Texas when Bob joined XTO, continuing his work after XTO was acquired by Exxon Mobile. After decades of dedicated service in his field, Bob retired in 2010. In October of 2022, Bob and Nancy moved once again, choosing Paola, Kansas, as their home in retirement.

Bob’s life was filled with rich experiences and joys outside of his career. He was an avid outdoorsman who found great peace in deer hunting and fishing. His love for football never waned; it remained a cherished topic and source of pride throughout his life. Music was another passion, with Bob often singing and playing guitar—particularly in the church band. Bob and his friends lovingly traveled to various churches, sharing their music and bringing joy to many.

Bob’s profound impact extended into his community and many networks of friendship. He was a 32nd Degree Free Mason and a Shriner, roles that brought him great pride and opportunities to extend help to others. Known for being funny and silly, Bob’s presence could fill any room. He was generous, a quiet giver, always seeking ways to help others and offer support with his big heart.

Bob’s proudest legacy was his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Penny; daughters Denise Foust, Michelle Penny, and Deanna (Lucky) Smith; grandchildren Danielle (David De Palma) Foust, Aaron (Joe Berman) Foust, Ryan (Elizabeth) Foust, Kyle (Jordan) Smith, and Justin Smith; and great-grandchildren Jonah DePalma, Ava DePalma, Shiloh De Palma, River Foust, and Theo Smith, and niece, Amy Penny. 

Bob is preceded in death by his father, Robert Douglas Sr.; his mother, Doris Penny; and his brother, Gerald Penny. Their memories, along with his legacy, will continue to inspire those who loved him.

The memory of Bob’s laughter, generosity, and compassion will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. He filled his days with music, love, and warmth, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and care.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Paola Chapel, 305 N Pearl Street, Paola, KS 66071. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm, also at the funeral home. Burial will take place at the Paola Cemetery, following the funeral.
