Nicholas William Modes, age 26, passed away at his Paola KS home, on April 25th, 2026.
Nick as most knew him was born July 15, 1999, the only child of Richard and Sheryl (Staley) Modes.
Surviving are his parents, his half-brother, Jason Modes of KS, Uncles and Aunts: William (Charissa) Modes of FL, Timothy (Sandra Modes) Walker of CO, William (Deborah Staley) Schopf Jr. of KS, Michael (Jennifer) Staley of KS, and many beloved cousins. Preceded in death by grandparents Marvin (Mary) Staley of KS, William (Jane) Modes Jr. of MO, and, Virginia Sanders (Hall) of KS, former wife of William Modes Jr.
He touched the lives and hearts of many with his genuine compassion and supportive nature. These qualities are what his employer says made his work as a CNA such a wonderful fit. He shared a strong desire to help his community with generous blood donations. He always brought his best encouraged in scouts, and developed by dedicated teachers and coaches. He was active in sports. His passion for it made him a talented baseball player awarded a scholarship to college.
He loved time with family and friends mostly spent fishing, hunting, camping, swimming, and kayaking.
Nick attended and played baseball at Paola High School, Allen County Community College, and Central Methodist University where he was also in the Alpha Phi Gamma fraternity.
His moral compass was love and forgiveness confirmed in his faith, and carried out in life. He was a gentle soul with a private battle with depression. He fought it with all his strength for as long as able. We ask that in lieu of flowers his memory be honored by providing love, kindness, and support to those in need. For those who wish to leave financial gifts, donations may be made directly to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or the Paola High School Baseball Account.
A celebration of life service will be held from 1-3pm, Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Hillsdale Presbyterian Church, 22875 W 255th St., Paola, KS 66036.
