Michael Arthur Bergman was born August 29, 1961, in San Bernardino, California to William and Barbara. Mike’s dad was in the Air Force, so he spent his childhood moving around the country, and often shared fond memories of his childhood in California, Michigan, Utah, and the family’s farm in Paola, Kansas.
Mike loved the outdoors, and became a part of Order of the Arrow during his teenage years. During one camping trip in the mountains, his troop got caught out in a blizzard and had to make their way through a freezing night and snow blindness in the elements. When Mike got older, he attended the University of Kansas and got a degree in industrial design. Mike was an incredibly hard worker and had various jobs throughout college, including his favorite, working on the wheat harvest all over the Midwest.
While in college, Mike’s sister-in-law, Sarah, set up a blind date with a beautiful fellow student named Laura Morgan who was studying to become a teacher. He fell head over heels in love and saw or called her every day after they met until the day they were married. Mike and Laura built their dream home on a hill in the country in Louisburg next to Laura’s parents and they had three daughters. Mike spent his autumns fixing cars and sitting next to bonfires in the backyard with his family, winters taking care of the various animals that belonged to his daughters (chickens, rabbits, dogs, and a duck) and fighting the snow and ice on his steep driveway, springtime working on the garden with his wife and sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds and deer, and summers taking his family on vacation, often road trips to the mountains, lakes, or the ocean in the 1970s classic GMC motorhome called “Odi” that he worked on as a hobby.
Mike’s family considered him a rock, staying steady and consistent for his wife and daughters; they could depend on him to fix anything, and, as a man of few words, he was a good listener. Mike had fully renovated his youngest daughter’s home and was in the process of renovating his and Laura’s house (he was a self-taught painter, electrician, carpenter, welder, plumber, woodworker, and car mechanic). Mike always owned a truck, and it was always filled with supplies from Home Depot, cow manure and mulch for Laura’s garden, and once even Girl Scouts as he drove them in the Louisburg Labor Day parade. He was a true renaissance man and also loved reading and staying up on current events.
Mike adored his grandchildren, and spent as much time as he could with them when they were babies (rocking them and walking with them) and doing activities with them as they got older (so many cardboard cars and houses, hikes in the woods, racetrack creations, and even two days spent building a radio with his grandson). Mike was a lover of Jesus and couldn't get enough of his Word - he read the Bible cover to cover several times throughout the years, had a deep relationship with Christ, and spent a lot of time with his church family. Mike lived a big life, filled with so much heart and adventures.
He was loved deeply by his wife, Laura, daughters, Jessica (Justin), Emily (Matthew), and Abigail (Alexander), and his five grandchildren, Theodore, Adelaide, Everett, Aurora, and Henry. He is also survived by his father, William, siblings, Ronald (Sarah) and Linda, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Barbara and James Morgan, his sister-in-law, Rebecca, and his mother, Barbara.
