Mary Ann (Hornecker) Hess, 82, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Brookdale Overland Park, Overland Park, Kansas. Family will meet with friends from 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa, Kansas. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, February 20, 2026. Private inurnment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mary Ann was born July 5, 1943, in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Dorothy (McCurdy) Hornecker. She lived in Overland Park, Kansas from 1966 to 1998, Paola, Kansas from 1998 to 2018, Olathe, Kansas 2019 to 2022, the moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 2022 where she has lived for the last four years. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1962. On January 25, 1963, Mary Ann was united in marriage to Sy Hess in Ottawa, Kansas.
Mary Ann was employed with the Village Green Restaurant in Prairie Village, Kansas then at the Abdallah Shrine Temple, Overland Park, Kansas for eighteen years before retiring in 2004. She joined her husband in his activities as a member of the Abdallah Shrine Temple of Overland Park, Kansas; co-founder of Blue Racer Shrine Unit; Spring Hill Masonic Lodge No. 56 A.F.& A.M; Scottish Rite; York Rite; Louisburg Shrine Club; Kansas Shrine Bowl-Football Committee; and they were both in the Jayhawk Trail Blazers Masonic Camping Club. She taught ceramics in their family home to their neighborhood friends and supported her daughters’ activities including being Girl Scout troop leader, cheerleading coach, softball scorekeeper, room mom, Job’s Daughters Council Member, and many other organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sy Hess; mother Dorothy Hornecker; two stepbrothers Bill Hornecker and Buddy Hornecker. Survivors include three daughters Susanna Catron of Olathe, Kansas, Sandra “Kay” Godwin (Greg) of Stilwell, Kansas, and Sherrie Hess of Spring Hill, Kansas; six grandchildren Payton Vail (Cody), Haley Catron, Taylor Godwin, Sierra Hess, Brady Catron, and Jacob Catron; great granddaughter Lettie Vail; great grandson Hendrix Vail; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
