Mary Iona Christie, born June 3, 1930, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, leaving behind a cherished legacy defined by devotion, resilience, and the love of her family.
Mary grew up in Thayer, Kansas, where she graduated from Thayer High School and continued her education with one year of study at Ft. Scott Community College in Ft. Scott, Kansas. She lived a life filled with faith, hard work, laughter, and unwavering love for her family. She believed there was always room for one more around the table, always time to lend a hand, and always a reason to be thankful for life’s simple blessings.
On September 17, 1950, Mary married Earnest A. Christie. Their union was one built upon mutual respect, love, and enduring partnership, supporting each other through life’s many seasons until Earnie’s passing in 2002. Together, they established a loving home and family, with Mary dedicating herself to her role as a homemaker; a role she filled with pride and care. After 24 years apart, we find peace in knowing they are together again.
Throughout her life, Mary’s fighting spirit was evident to all who knew her. Mary was proud to serve as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, reflecting both her pride in heritage and her commitment to service. She deeply enjoyed flea markets, auctions, and square dancing, and bingo nights were a particular favorite.
Mary’s legacy continues through her beloved family. She is survived by her her sister, Joan Unruh; daughters, Vickie and Joe Ruggiero of Lindsborg, Ks; Cheryl and Charles Shaw of Ottawa, Ks; and her son, Gary (Ernie) and Kelly Christie of Fallbrook, Ca; her grandchildren, Mike and Joanne Ruggiero, Gina and Jason Avant, Mary and Paul Grimm, Julie and Dominic Longo, Toni and Matt Cunningham, Travis Shaw, Denise Bridwell, and Deanna Christie; along with a growing family of great-grandchildren that brought endless joy to her life. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Earnest A. Christie, as well as her father, Abraham Friesen, and mother, Nellie Friesen; and her granddaughter Misty Shaw. Her legacy isn’t measured by the years she lived, but by the family she raised, the kindness she shared and the memories she leaves behind. She taught us that love is shown in everyday moments; a warm meal, a welcoming home, a helping hand, or simply showing up for the people who matter most.
Visitation will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory, 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, KS 66067, on July 23, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place at the same location on July 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at Highland Cemetery, 1050 East 15th Street, Ottawa, KS 66067, at 11:30 a.m.
Mary will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love her. Her smile, lighthearted laughter, and devotion to family will live on in all of us.
