Lue Anna Lurea Hellyer

Lue Anna (Lue Ann) Lurea Allen Rowley Hellyer was born on October 3rd, 1938 at the Nazarene parsonage in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mildred L. Allen and Rev. Jacob (Jimmie) Astor Allen. From a young age, Lue Ann sang and played the piano in church, for revivals and funerals. She loved the church and gave her life to Jesus Christ when she was 5 years old.

Lue Ann lived in Iowa, Goshen Ark., California and graduated from Argentine (KCK) High school in 1955. She always considered Kansas City her hometown. As a young woman she worked at Adlers Clothing Store in downtown Kansas City and continued to dress beautifully all her life.

Lue attended Bethany Nazarene College outside of Oklahoma City where she met her husband, Rev. Dr. Edward A. Rowley. They were married June 21, 1957 and entered full-time ministry in the Nazarene church. Later, they would join the United Methodist Church and serve churches in Illinois as well as Sterling (KS) UMC, First UMC in Hutchinson Kansas, and First UMC in Wichita KS. They also lived in Hays KS where Rev. Rowley was Kansas West Conference Superintendent and Lue Ann was a music teacher in Ellis, Ks. The Rev. Dr Edward Rowley passed away in Feb. 1987. They had two children, Corey Edward and Laurie Lurea.

Lue Ann continued to teach music (B.A. Wichita St,) at Carter Elementary in Wichita, KS. She received her Masters from Friends University in Sacred Music. She also taught music at Christa McAuliffe Elementary school in Lenexa, Ks. And Holy Trinity Catholic School in Paola, Ks.

On June 27, 1992, Lue Ann married Harry Hellyer in Wichita, Ks. In 1994, Lue Ann and Harry Hellyer moved to Paola, Ks. to be near her daughter and opened The Victorian Lady Bed and Breakfast. Lue Ann absolutely loved Victorian antiques and providing hospitality to guests. She said that people came to them “broken” and left “loved”. Once again, she saw it as her ministry to Jesus Christ. Her grandchildren grew up at her house and remember her beautiful garden and delicious food. The Hellyers retired from business in 2013. Lue Ann continued to provide piano and vocal lessons in her home until she was 82 years old. Her three grandchildren attribute their musical abilities to the teaching of their grandmother.

Lue Ann led many Youth choirs and mission trips and ministered to many young people throughout the years. A memorable music group was at the UMC in Hutchinson, KS. called the Shalom-Agape singers. She was so proud of her “kids”. Lue Ann loved cooking, music, gardening, traveling, entertaining, church work and being with her family. She was a founding elder at the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church (Paola), member of DAR, and served multiple church committees. She was a strong life-force and will be deeply missed. But she was so happy that her family continued in Jesus’s ministry.

Those who have preceded her in death are her parents, Mildred and Rev. J.A. Allen, Her siblings, Vada Davidson, Jimmie Allen Jr, and Rev. Larry Allen and her first husband, Rev. Dr. Edward Rowley.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Hellyer, Paola, her son, Corey Edward Rowley, Paola, daughter Rev. Laurie Rowley Johnston (Kirk) Paola, Grandchildren, Lindsey Maxwell (Dustin) (Spring Hill), Rev. Dr. Luke (Jamie) Johnston (Rock Valley, Iowa), Rev. Ian (McKayla) Johnston (Olathe, Ks) Great grandchildren, Reagan and Wesley Maxwell, Norah, Emmi and Lucy Johnston, Kerigan Johnston, and one more due next year. She had several nieces and nephews.

She also had several step-children and grand and great-step-children.

Visitation Monday September 21st at Lighthouse Church from 9:30 to 10:30 am with celebration of life following at 10:30am. Burial immediately following service at Hillsdale Cemetery. Luncheon at the Hillsdale Presbyterian Church.
