Leonard Clarence Humphrey, a devoted family man and cherished member of his community, passed away on May 30, 2025, at Rock Creek of Ottawa, Ottawa, Kansas, at the age of 96. Born on September 7, 1928, in Lyndon, Kansas, the son of Wilbur Clarence and Gladys Lena (McCreight) Humphrey. Leonard lived a life characterized by hard work, faith, and commitment to family.
Leonard graduated from Pomona High School in 1947. He then took his knowledge and experience into the workforce with a diligent work ethic reflecting the lessons he learned in his youth.
A long-time farmer since the 1970s, Leonard also embraced various trades, becoming a residential carpenter during the 70s and early 80s and dedicating many years to small engine repairs before retiring in 2020. His industrious spirit and versatility resonated with those who knew him.
Leonard was a devoted member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Ottawa, Kansas, where he actively participated in several ministry opportunities. His commitment to his faith was demonstrated through completed visitation trips, missionary trips, and performing Christian services for the Amazing Grace Baptist Camp of Ottawa. His faith and service were central to his life's purpose.
In matters of the heart, Leonard found love in his marriage to Evelyn Staadt on June 7, 1950, in Richter, Kansas. Together they built a family enriched by love and strong values. Evelyn would remain a beloved partner in his life until her passing on September 27, 2015. Leonard later united in marriage to Wanda Skeens on September 7, 2018, in Ottawa, Kansas. Wanda survives of Richmond, Kansas.
Along with his wife Wanda, Leonard is survived by three sons Kenneth Humphrey (Becky) of Gilmer, Texas, Lyle Humphrey of Kansas City, Kansas, and Gary Humphrey (Donna) of Ottawa, Kansas; daughter Laneita Brundage (Tom) Travelers Rest, South Carolina; as well as three stepdaughters, Stacey Smith of Ottawa, Kansas, Tracey Skeen of Georgetown, Texas, and Kacey Skeens of Oelwein, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters Doris Hetrick (Fred) of Topeka, Kansas, Ruth Able of Vassar, Kansas, Lois Jones of Topeka, Kansas, and Vera Armstrong (Jack) of Topeka, Kansas.
Leonard joins in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Evelyn Staadt; parents; sister, Erma Roland; grandchild, Eliza Marie Humphrey; daughter-in-law, Joyce Humphrey; five brothers-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.
Leonard leaves behind a rich legacy of love, compassion, and faith that will endure in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be missed dearly, yet his impact on those around him will continue to resonate through the generations he has nurtured and loved.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday June 7, 2025 at Calvary Baptist Church in Ottawa, Kansas. Family will greet friends 5:30 to 7:30 pm Friday June 6, 2025 at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa, Kansas. Burial at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas following Saturday services.
