Kenton L. Markley, a beloved member of the Ottawa community, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Born on January 2, 1964, in Ottawa, Kansas, he was the cherished son of George and Patricia (Hollon) Markley, who have preceded him in death.
Kent attended Appanoose Grade School as well as Pomona High School, where he began to form friendships that would last a lifetime. Out of high school, Kent worked stripping antique furniture, followed by working side by side with his mom and dad, who purchased the Maple Leaf Motel & Gas in Baldwin City, where he became well known in the community. After the family sold the motel business, Kent joined his dad in forming M&M Guttering, with his brother Keith joining in the business soon after. On March 18, 1995, Kent married Shelly Overstreet and were together for 28 years. They have two daughters together and two grandchildren. His maintenance and janitorial career soon took off at Smart Building and later led him to First Baptist Church where he continued to work until his passing.
Kent is survived by the mother of his children, Shelly Markley of Ottawa, Kansas. Their children, Amberly Markley of Lawrence, Kansas, Adrianna Thomasson and husband Luke Thomasson of Baldwin City, Kansas and two grandchildren, Tallon and Parklynn who were a source of joy and pride in his life. Daughter Katie Corbin and husband Ronald Corbin of Des Moines, Iowa and grandchildren Braylen and Angelo. Three brothers, Keith Markley and wife Amy, Kevin Markley and wife Lori, Shawn Markley and wife Kim, and 28 nieces and nephews.
Kent was known for his free spirit, stubbornness, and his many stories that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Kent enjoyed fishing, a pastime that brought him tranquility and happiness. He was known as a great father, and his love for his grandchildren was profound. Kent will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of his family and friends forever.
In honor of Kent’s life, a visitation will be held on March 5, 2026, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, located at 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, Kansas, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
