Kelly Strait

Kelly Lynne Strait, 64, passed away on September 30, 2026, at the University of Kansas Hospice House in Olathe. She was born on October 21, 1961, to Donald and Shirley Hanes.

Kelly graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1979. For many years, she worked as a florist at Hanes Florist alongside her mother, sharing her love of flowers with the community. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. A devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan, Kelly cheered on her team with enthusiasm.

Kelly married David Johnson in June 1979, and they later divorced in 2004. Together, they had three children: Joshua, Christina, and Stephanie. In November 2006, Kelly married Jerry Strait and welcomed his children, Rod, Sheila, and Sherry, into her family.

Kelly was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Hanes and Shirley Morehead; her stepfathers, Rex Cherry and James Morehead; her first husband, David Johnson; her husband, Jerry Strait; and her son-in-law, Daniel Claar. 

Kelly is lovingly remembered by her children Josh Johnson (Rhonda), Christina Claar, and Stephanie DeGeest (Kevin); her stepchildren Rod Strait (Anja), Sheila Attia (Mohamed), and Sherry Hare (John); her sister, Kimberly Hodgson (Mike); her stepsisters, Dee Ellen Slayman and Jamie Sasenick (Joe); her grandchildren, Dalton (Brittany), Griffin, Scarlet, Haylee (Wayde), Peyton, Gabrielle, Chase, Danny, Maria, Henry, Evan, Nita, and Chamain; and her great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Kelly had a big heart and would do anything for anyone. Her kindness, generous spirit, love of family and friends, and the joy she found in flowers and gardening will be remembered by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to the family to help offset funeral expenses. Checks may be made payable to Christina Claar.
