Shortly thereafter, he joined the Army Reserve, serving from February 28, 1959, to February 28, 1967, in the 89th Regiment stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Ord, and Fort Carson. A lover of recreation, he participated in a bowling league and tended to his farm and animals with great care. His active involvement in the Demolay Lodge, Boy Scout programs, Masonic Lodge, Mirza Shrine, and Scottish Rite reflected his commitment to community service and brotherhood.
On October 23, 1960, Joe married Ruth Ann Rhodes in a ceremony held at Paola Presbyterian Church, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that would endure for decades.
