Jim Gilmore, a beloved figure in the community, passed away peacefully at the Kansas City Hospice House on January 21, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on September 15, 1938, in Sweet Springs, Missouri, Jim was a steadfast presence in the lives of many and will be remembered for his down-to-earth nature and cowboy spirit.
Jim's early life unfolded in Sweet Springs, where he graduated from Sweet Springs High School. His academic journey continued at Missouri Valley College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. This foundation fueled his successful career as the operator of the Jim Gilmore Insurance Agency through State Farm in Overland Park. Jim's dedication to his profession was evident as he often received recognition through company-sponsored trips for his outstanding achievements.
Throughout his life, Jim possessed a passion for classic and new cars, a love for fishing and hunting, and relished adventures at estate and cattle auctions. His affinity for the outdoors was complemented by his playful skill in operating his skid loader, driving his large air-conditioned tractor around the property, and joyful rides around the farm with his dogs. Thursday nights were reserved for poker games with close friends, where laughter and camaraderie filled the air. Jim was a devoted fan of John Wayne, embodying the classic cowboy ethos that defined his personality.
In his personal life, Jim experienced the joys and challenges of relationships. He met his first wife, Sandy, during his college years, with whom he had three children. After their divorce, Jim found love again with Sondra. He was a devoted father and grandfather, leaving behind a legacy that includes daughters Lori (Matt) Emerick, Christy (Tom) Stuart, and Robin (Richard) MacClymont, as well as step-child Shannon Bryan. Jim was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren—Ashley (Eian) Good, Kathryn Emerick, Shelby (Mike) Gale, Cody (Mireya) John, Crystal Herman, Elizabeth MacClymont, Rachel Stuart, Drew Bryan, and Jack Bryan—and four great-grandchildren, Mia, Axel, William, and Kolt. The love he had for his family extended to many cherished nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Sondra Gilmore, his parents George and Myrtle Gilmore, his step-son John Bryan, his brother Russ Gilmore, and his sister Bernice Meyer. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to resonate through the countless memories shared among his family and friends.
