Jerry Leon Mathews

With deep reverence and heartfelt remembrance, we celebrate the life of Jerry Leon Mathews who departed this world on August 1st, 2026, at Delmar Gardens nursing home. He was born on February 19th, 1949, in Scipio, KS, to Boyd Columbus Mathews and Lodesca Delores Rea. Jerry Mathews’ journey was marked by dedication, resilience, and enduring warmth, the hallmarks of a life lived with purpose and generous spirit.

From his earliest days in Scipio to his twilight years, Jerry embodied the steadfastness of the Kansas plains. He graduated from Carbondale high school in 1967, forging friendships and memories that would illuminate his path. With a sense of duty and patriotism Jerry entered the United States Navy where he served his country for 4 years with honor. The lessons and the experiences of those years left an indelible mark on his character. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Jerry returned to civilian life, carrying with him not only the burdens but also the quiet pride of a Vietnam War veteran.

Jerry’s industrious nature was evident throughout his working life. He worked at a rock quarry in his early days while building a farrier business on the side. With skilled hands and a patient heart he worked devotedly among horses, he also loved dogs, raised and bred service dogs finding fulfillment and kinship in this ancient craft until his health affected by his war time service made it no longer possible. Yet Jerrys true legacy abides in the hearts and memories of those who journeyed thru life with him.

Jerry leaves behind his son Mike Mathews and siblings, Glenda Satterfield, Vicki Asbury (Chuck) and Joe Mathews whose wife is Jean. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. His circle of affection extended to his dear friends Lonnie and Nancy Miller, and Veronica Wood. They took great pride in caring for Jerry and all his needs in the last few years of his life.

The tapestry of his family is woven with both enduring love and irreplaceable loss.

Jerry was proceeded in death by his father Boyd Columbus Mathews, and his Mother Lodesca Delores Rea Mathews, his sisters Frances McElwain, Nadine Branic, Norma (Cookie) Huston, and Joyce McBride. And his brother Richard Mathews.

Their memories intertwined with Jerrys form a rich legacy of kinship, and remembrance. Though his passing leaves a profound absence, those who knew Jerry will long recall his devotion to family, to friends, to the landscapes of his youth. They remember a man of quiet strength and unwavering kindness whose humor and humility offered solace even in moments of trial.
