Jeffery "Dean" Hampson

Jeffery Dean Hampson, 66, of Lane, KS passed away peacefully on June 24 surrounded by family after a brave battle with cancer.

Dean was born on November 10, 1959 in Stuttgart, Germany to Cletus and Patricia (Bruce) Hampson, while his father was stationed there for the US Army. After his father was discharged, they moved to Shawnee, KS then to a farm south of Osawatomie. Before moving into the Fairview School in 1967. He graduated from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1977. He answered the call to serve just two days after graduation, Dean entered Marine Corps boot camp at the young age of 17. He served his country with great pride, with assignments at Camp David, Camp Lejeune, and MCAS New River where he earned the opportunity to be the head hydraulic mechanic for Marine One, the official Presidential Helicopter. In 1980, he was deployed at sea in support of the Iran hostage crisis.

After completing his service with the Marines, Dean married the love of his life “Marcy” in 1983 and became a loving father to her two children, settling in Lane, KS. Dean worked various jobs before finding his professional home at the Osawatomie State Hospital in 1989. He dedicated 28 years of service as the Grounds Maintenance supervisor, retiring in 2017. After retirement, he worked along side Shane Stout with 4-County Monuments. In addition to his career, Dean was a talented farmer and an expert trapper. He was the go-to person for local residents facing wildlife trouble, always ready to lend a hand. Passionate about passing on his skills, Dean mentored and shared his outdoor expertise with more children and community members than can be counted. Dean was also a talented woodworker and craftsman.

He was a devoted and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His spirit and personality, and candid sense of humor is what made Dean so memorable to anyone who was privileged enough to know him.

Dean's legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Marcella “Marcy” Hampson of Lane, KS; his children, Derek (April) Wendt of Paola, and Traci (Danny) West of Osawatomie; his cherished grandchildren, Kelcey, Olivia, Drake, and Leland; and his adored great-grandchildren, Theodoura, Quinn, and Clara. He is also survived by his brother, Gene Hampson of Osawatomie, and his sisters, Tricia (Johnny) Culbertson of Lane, KS and Julie Hampson of Seattle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletus and Patricia Hampson.
