Janice Doreen Thomas, born on December 10, 1940, in Osage County, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at The University of Kansas Health System Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas. She lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and love, leaving behind a legacy cherished by all who knew her.
Janice was the beloved daughter of Arnold D. and Hattie Leona (Mietchen) Horne. She grew up surrounded by the beauty of rural Kansas, a setting that helped cultivate her lifelong passions for yard work, tending to her flower gardens and yard ornaments, as well as enjoying the outdoors through camping and fishing. A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Janice found joy in spirited support of her team, and she delighted in trips to the casino, which added moments of playful excitement to her days.
On October 7, 1959, Janice married Louis Thomas, with whom she shared many years of marriage until his passing in 2021. Together, they built a family rooted in love and commitment. Janice’s career was marked by steadfast dedication; she served as Lead Assembly for Honeywell for twenty-three years and worked for Price Chopper from 2021 until December 2025, demonstrating an exemplary work ethic and professionalism.
Janice is survived by her companion, Art Allan, who stood by her side in her later years, and her sons, Monty Thomas (Donna) and Michael Thomas (Terri). She also leaves behind three grandchildren Kim Barhardt (Zach), Ashton Harred (Zack), and Alexa Caceres (Marc); four great-grandchildren Lukas Harred, Harper Harred, Emerson Caceres, and Zhuri Caceres; and sister Terri McFadden who carry forward Janice’s memory with affection.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Thomas, her parents Arnold and Hattie Horne, and her brothers Gary Horne, Robert “Bob” Horne, and Gene Horne.
A visitation to honor Janice’s life will be held on May 29, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dengel & Son Mortuary, located at 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, Kansas. Family, friends, and all who cherished Janice are invited to pay their respects and celebrate a life well-lived. Inurnment will be held 10am Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Pleasant View Cemetery (Agricola), 2752 Xeric Road, Waverly, KS 66871.
Janice will be remembered for her loving nature, steadfast commitment to her family and work, and her joyful embrace of life’s simple pleasures. Her memory endures in the hearts of those who loved her and the legacy she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Olathe Hospice House, 15310 S. Marion Street, Olathe, Kansas 66061.
