Listen to Obituary

Janet Ann England, 83, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026, at Homestead Assisted Living in Paola, Kansas.

Born on July 19, 1943, in Paola, Janet was the youngest daughter of George and Corrine Prothe. She grew up in Block, Kansas, attending Trinity Lutheran School and later graduating with the Paola High School Class of 1961. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life, and she was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Block.

In the summer of 1962, Janet met her husband, Ray England, at the PlayMart. They were married on September 15, 1963, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Together, they built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community—first on their farm in Hillsdale until 1980, and then in Paola.

Janet devoted many years to public service. She worked at Bishop and Lee Attorneys as a secretary before joining the District Court of Miami County in 1973. Beginning as a deputy clerk, she rose to Chief Clerk in 1990, a role she carried out with dedication and integrity until her retirement in 2008.

A woman of many interests, Janet enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and playing bridge. She also spent several years restoring all the woodwork at the Miami County Courthouse to its original finish—a project that reflected her patience, craftsmanship, and pride in her community. She found great joy in her grandchildren, and she enjoyed watching them in all of their various sporting activities. She and Ray also shared countless hours cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; and her siblings Laverne Stringham, Milton Prothe, Milburn Prothe, and Arlin Prothe.

She is survived by her three daughters: Debbie (Richard) Bogner of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Kathy Auten of Olathe, Kansas; and Jayme England of Broomfield, Colorado. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Andrew (Tori) Bogner, Emily Bogner, Madison Auten, Joel (Haley) Auten, and Nathan (Anna Beth) Bogner; as well as four great‑grandchildren: Carlyn Bogner, Raylen Bogner, Isla Auten, and Elliot Auten. Janet is also survived by her brothers‑ and sisters‑in‑law, along with many nieces and nephews.
