James Edward Berbaum, born on November 1, 1934, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026. Throughout his 91 years, James embodied dedication to both his family and the craft in which he took immense pride.
James grew up under the care and guidance of his late parents, Nicholas and Mary Berbaum, whose values and commitment to hard work shaped the man he became. Honoring his passion for creation and craftsmanship, James attended Cabinet Making Trade School, where he honed the skills that would become the foundation of his lifelong vocation. For four decades, he worked as a cabinet maker and farmer, contributing not only to his family's well-being but also to the local community with his expertise and steadfast work ethic.
James’ love for the world extended beyond his professional achievements. A true enthusiast for discovery and adventure, he was captivated by the skies and became a private pilot, spending countless hours among the clouds. He was an esteemed member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), sharing camaraderie and stories with fellow aviation lovers. When on the ground, James devoted time to woodworking and boating—hobbies that reflected his love for craftsmanship and the outdoors.
James’ greatest legacy, however, is the family he cherished deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anita Louise Berbaum, and their son, James Nicholas Berbaum. Their lives are a testament to his loving guidance, gentle wisdom, and unwavering support. James also carries the cherished memory of his parents, Nicholas and Mary Berbaum, whose spirits live on in the values he passed down to his own family.
James will be honored with a visitation at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory, located at 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, KS 66067. The funeral service will also take place at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery on K-68 Highway in Pomona, KS.
James Edward Berbaum’s integrity, humility, and love for both his craft and family will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. His journey now continues in the everlasting memories of those who had the privilege to know and love him.
