Howard Elton Watson

Howard Elton "Bud" Watson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on January 4, 2026, at The University of Kansas Health System-Olathe. Born on December 30, 1940, in Cleopatra, Missouri, the son of Howard W. and Juanita M. (Anderson) Watson, Howard lived a life dedicated to his family, career, and passions.

Bud graduated from Mercer R-3 High School in 1959 and went on to have a fruitful career as a heavy equipment operator. He was proud to have worked at Amino Brothers and Max Rieke Construction, where he made significant contributions to the field before retiring for the second time in 2006.

On October 27, 1963, Howard united in marriage to Carolyn Berndt in Lineville, Iowa. Their bond was characterized by love, companionship, and shared interests, especially their mutual enjoyment of country music. From the early 1960’s, Bud showcased his musical talents by singing and playing in various bands, adding a vibrant chapter to his rich tapestry of life. Bud was also a member of the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers, and Singer organization since the early 1980’s.

Beyond his music, Bud had a passion for woodworking, taking pride in creating with his hands. He valued his time spent with family and friends, often enjoying leisurely mornings over coffee at the Hot Off the Press Coffee Shop in Wellsville, where he relished the camaraderie and conversations that filled those moments.

Bud is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn; son Greg Watson (Terri); grandchildren Ashli Boehm and Krystina Lehman (Cody); and great-grandchildren Corbin, Rhett, Eleanor, Walker, and Wyatt.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Margaret Woodley (Eugene); and sister Grace Stark (Bill).

Bud will be remembered not only for his dedication to his family but also for his kind spirit and the joy he brought to all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
