Gussie Dean Olson, a dedicated educator and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026. Born on July 27, 1935 on a farm in Mayetta, Kansas, he was the son of Gussie and Ines (Cordon) Olson.
For eight years, Dean attended the Wigwam School (a one-room school house), was a graduate of Mayetta High School in the class of 1953, and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Washburn University in 1957. That same year he served in the Army National Guard and most memorably was united in marriage with the love of his life Bonnie Bausch on June 17, 1957.
Beginning his teaching career in 1958, Dean devoted himself to coaching basketball and teaching Algebra and American History in the classrooms at Chase County High School (Cottonwood Falls), Burlington High School, and Pomona High School. His dedication to education was characterized by a genuine passion for nurturing students and coaching kids of all ages, reflecting a lifelong commitment to community and youth development.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dean was a man of many interests. His love for farming, raising and riding horses, and the simple joy of feeding “snacks” to horses from the back of his truck paints the portrait of a man deeply connected to the land and its animals. He was always a farm kid at heart. Later in life his enthusiasm shifted to mowing — a task he relished so much that he would mow areas not even requiring it (and humorously remembered for not always mowing in straight lines!). In the winter, he took pride in tending to the wood stove. Dean also enjoyed the friendly gossip sessions with other retirees at McDonald’s and engaging in lively political debates, embodying a spirit full of life, patience, and vibrant conversation.
His family memories hold a special place in describing the man. When it came to his grandkids his motto was always “Let me know where it’s happening — and I’ll be there.” Basketball, football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, and softball games, dance recitals, music programs — if his grandkids were involved you could count on him being there. Winning or losing, he always knew how to motivate and encourage them.
Dean is survived by his son James Still (Jayson) of Los Angeles, California; his daughter Trucia Putney (Jim); his son Steve Olson (Shawna); his honorary son Roger Driver; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister Barb Klahr-Jacobsen. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Richard Olson. His enduring love and devotion for his wife Bonnie was deeply lived until her passing in 2013 after 56 years of marriage.
A memorial visitation to honor Dean will be held from 6-9pm, Monday, May 4, 2026, at Dengel & Son Mortuary located at 235 South Hickory Street, Ottawa, Kansas.
Dean’s legacy is one of education, community involvement, and heartfelt connection to family and friends. His contributions to the lives he touched endure in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. He will be remembered with respect, fondness, and gratitude for a gentle life well-lived.
