Gloria M. Terrill, passed away on February 28, 2026, at Rock Creek of Ottawa in Ottawa, Kansas. Born on July 16, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the beloved daughter of Dr. Cornelius E. and Virginia (Kornfeld) Portas. Gloria was a remarkable individual whose legacy of education, community service, and love for family will be cherished by all who knew her.
A proud graduate of Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh, Gloria excelled academically, graduating at the top of her class as valedictorian and earning the honor of being the commencement speaker. She furthered her education attending Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on a full scholarship, and also pursued studies at Pittsburg State College in Pittsburg, Kansas, and The Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas.
On October 11, 1947, Gloria married her high school sweetheart, Jack W. Terrill, in a ceremony that marked them as the second couple to marry at the Danforth Chapel on the Kansas University campus. Their bond was profound, characterized by mutual support and shared aspirations. Jack preceded her in death in 1991, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories woven with love.
Gloria's contributions to her community were numerous and impactful. Upon moving to Ottawa, Kansas, she volunteered at the Ottawa University print shop. She and Jack warmly welcomed numerous OU students into their lives, affectionately nicknamed “Papa T.” and “Mama T.” This spirit of generosity extended into her professional life as well, where she taught elementary school in DeSoto and Sunflower, Kansas. She dedicated over two decades to the Franklin County Day Care, serving as its director for twenty years. Her commitment to nurturing young minds demonstrated her deep-rooted passion for education and children.
An active member of First Baptist Church in Ottawa, Gloria engaged extensively in church activities. She taught Sunday school, served as a Deaconess, and took on the role of circle chairperson in the church's Prayer Chain. Her culinary skills were also put to good use as she prepared meals for senior adults within the church community. Gloria's influence extended beyond the walls of the church; she was recognized as Ottawa Woman of the Year in 1975 and was an esteemed Life Member of numerous organizations, including the Soroptimists and the Women's Educational Society at Ottawa University.
Gloria is survived by her sons, Glenn F. Terrill of Kansas City and retired Judge Gary R, Terrill, of Overland Park, Kansas. Her cherished granddaughters, Laura Powell and Mariel Terrill Martinez, and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Powell, will continue to carry forth her legacy. In addition, she is remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews, Greg (Susan) Portas of St. Louis, Missouri; Ken (Carol) Terrill; Mark Terrill; and Kris Archer, as well as cousins Dennis Miller, Dr. Steven Miller, Dr. Carol Miller, Cathy Phiel, and Amy O’Brien.
Along with her husband, Gloria is preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Janelle K. Terrill.
Although Gloria has departed from this world, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
