George A. Seuferling passed away on October 15, 2026, in Atchison, Kansas, on his 96th birthday. He was born on October 15, 1930, in Bucyrus, Kansas, and lived a life marked by faith, service, learning, and wide-ranging interests that brought him close to both people and the world around him.
George attended Wea Grade School and graduated from Wea High School. He continued his education at St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, Kansas, and later attended Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. On March 17, 1956, he was ordained a Catholic priest, beginning a vocation that would shape the course of his life for decades to come.
Throughout his ministry, George served as associate pastor in Kansas City, Kansas, and Topeka, and also in rural pastorates including Emmet, Delia, Frankfort, and Lillis. He later served in campus ministry at Emporia State University before retiring from the priesthood in 2001. He was known as a successful preacher and teacher, especially through the RCIA program, where he shared his faith with clarity, conviction, and care.
His spiritual life remained vibrant and deeply rooted. He never lost his excitement over Vatican II, and he was nourished by liturgical emphasis while growing in appreciation of meditation and the Word. He found nature and all of creation helpful in feeling close to God and in nurturing his stewardship activities. His faith was also expressed in action through a passion for justice and human rights. He helped establish a sister community in El Salvador and visited there 13 times, helped establish St. Mary’s Food Kitchen, and volunteered at women’s prisons.
George’s life was also filled with energy, curiosity, and joy. He enjoyed humor and had an extraordinary range of interests. He loved comics, spirituality, and novels. He enjoyed baseball, softball, basketball, hunting, fishing, sailing, flying as a private pilot, bicycling, motorcycling, ham radio, playing guitar, playing 5-string banjo, mime, water skiing, handyman work, woodworking, painting, travel, movies, and stage productions. He participated in Bike Across Kansas and was a member of the National Association of Priest Pilots, the National Board of Federation of Priest Councils, and served as Pastor Leader of Wyandotte County. In every season of life, he brought enthusiasm, intelligence, and a generous spirit to the people and causes that mattered to him.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Seuferling; his mother, Theresa Seuferling; and his brothers, Steven and Robert Seuferling. He is survived by his brothers, James Seuferling and Ken Seuferling, and by his sister, Teresa Kiesling, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. His family and all who knew him carry forward the memory of a man whose priestly calling, love of learning, sense of humor, and devotion to justice touched many lives.
