Gary Thomas Schulz, a beloved member of the Franklin County community, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Born on February 1, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, Gary was the son of John Carl and Dorothy (Gregg) Schulz, both of whom have preceded him in death.
Gary's life was characterized by his constant joy and the way he cared for others. He worked for many years at Country Mart as a sacker, serving customers with kindness and reliability. A nearly lifelong resident of Franklin County, he had deep roots in the area, attending school in Rantoul and Ottawa, which helped shape the values he carried throughout his life.
Gary found joy in fishing, gardening, bicycling, and feeding the birds, activities that brought him great happiness and a sense of peace.
Gary is survived by his brothers: Johnny Schulz of Topeka, Kansas; Richard Schulz of Boise, Idaho; and Dennis Schulz (Paula) of Ottawa, Kansas. He also leaves behind his niece Megan Bones (Matthew); nephew Chris Schulz (Stacy); niece Leah Schulz; and nephew Richard Schulz Jr. In addition, he is remembered by his great-niece Kaelin Bones and great-nephews Ryan Bones and Jace Schulz. They will carry his memory forward, cherishing the times they shared.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dengel & Son Mortuary, located at 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, Kansas. A graveside service will be held the following day, Tuesday, July 22, at 10:00 AM at Ruhamah Cemetery, 4190 Jackson Road, Rantoul, Kansas.
Gary will be remembered fondly for his joyful spirit, his close ties to family, and the way he ended every phone conversation with, “Just making sure everyone is okay!” His legacy of kindness and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
