Gary Duane DePriest, born on March 3, 1949, in Ottawa, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his residence in Ottawa on March 19, 2026. Gary embodied dedication, love, and faithful service throughout his seventy-seven years.
Gary was the beloved son of the late Othal and Ruth (Peugh) DePriest. United in marriage to Diana Boyd, he and Diana shared an extraordinary journey together for fifty-three years, having met in 1973. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
A proud American and a man deeply dedicated to his faith, Gary served with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He held the rank of Sergeant and was recognized with multiple awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal (1st Award), reflecting his commitment and exemplary service and love for his country. Gary was honored and deeply connected to his Muscogee (Creek) family and heritage.
Gary was known to his family as “Superman” a nickname that spoke volumes about his role as a loving father and mentor to all that knew him. His family cherished him not only for his unwavering love but also for the strength and determination he showed in every aspect of life. A man who gave everything all he had, he carried himself as an incredible human being—resolute, faithful, and compassionate.
His interests and hobbies painted a vivid picture of a man who savored life's joys and embraced adventures with zest. Gary loved traveling, especially to Myrtle Beach and Branson as he took his family to each, over the last several years. He took joy in building, having constructed multiple decks and sheds that stand as lasting markers of his craftsmanship and dedication. He enjoyed bowling (bowled 200 once), tennis, creating beautiful stained-glass art, intricate ceramics, financial spreadsheets, hunting and shooting and encouraging and mentoring others. Even leisure was infused with his unique spirit, as he delighted in family meals, homemade ice cream, banana splits, and the lively rhythms of country line dancing. Among his proudest accomplishments was achieving a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do symbolizing his perseverance and discipline.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Diana; his son, Charles Russell Boyd; (Kathy) his daughter, Buffy Lynn Cooper (Maurice). Siblings Harold, David (Marcia), Martha Dodd (Bobby)and Phillip as well as his loving grandchildren Dylan (Rachel), Emma Grace, Lyrik and Trey. They, along with all who knew him, carry forward his legacy of love, honor, and steadfast commitment.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, mother and siblings Ron and Becky.
