Edward Michael Tonsing lived a life filled with passion for music, family, and the simple joys that make life meaningful. Born in Florida, Edward spent much of his life there honing his remarkable skill as a bass player, performing in numerous bands and sharing his deep love of music with fellow musicians and audiences alike. His passion for music was evident to everyone who knew him, and his bandmates throughout the years respected and cared for him greatly.
Edward was known for his sharp intelligence and thoughtful perspective. When he spoke, his words were often rooted in facts and insight, making it difficult to disagree with his well-reasoned viewpoints. At the same time, he carried a warm heart, a sense of humor, and a genuine love for the people around him.
About thirteen years ago, Edward moved to Kansas to be near part of his family, living in the household of his niece Christine and her family, as well as spending time with his nephew David and his family. In the years that followed, his brother Eric Tonsing later joined him in Kansas, strengthening the family bonds they shared there. Edward embraced his life in Kansas wholeheartedly. During his time here, he found meaningful work that gave him a deep sense of purpose and self-worth. He also continued doing what he loved most—playing music—forming friendships with new bandmates who shared his passion.
A memorable milestone in his Kansas years was purchasing his first home about a year ago, something that brought him great pride and happiness. He also accomplished many personal goals during his time here and remained deeply connected to the family around him.
Edward never missed a holiday or family gathering in the Christine or David households. He always showed up for every celebration and quickly became the center of the party. One New Year’s Eve, he and the nieces and nephews decided to continue the celebration at Christine’s oldest daughter’s home. After leaving, Ed managed to get lost along the way, and some very kind police officers helped guide him back to Christine’s front door at an absurdly early hour of the morning—something the family still laughs about today, especially since at that time he had absolutely no sense of direction. His presence, laughter, and stories were an important part of every gathering, and his absence will be deeply felt. He was incredibly well loved here in Kansas.
Edward also had a special place in his heart for animals, particularly cats. In fact, he seemed to have a unique gift—stray cats would often appear wherever he lived, as if they somehow knew he would care for them. He welcomed them with open arms and cherished them deeply, just as he cherished his family.
Edward even once pursued an unconventional dream when he attempted to run for President of the United States in 2016, a reflection of both his strong convictions and his belief in speaking up for what he thought was right. In 2016, Ed even made headlines in a local newspaper when he filed paperwork to run for President. True to his humor and belief that ordinary people mattered, he once said, “I might just take it a bit more seriously just to show America that anyone can throw their hat into the race.” It was just one more example of Ed’s bold spirit and willingness to dream big.
Edward was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Carl Tonsing.
He is survived by his brother Eric Tonsing; seven nieces—Theresa, Christine, Ruth, Mary, Joanne, Michelle, and Leanne—and two nephews—David and Robert. Through his nieces and nephews, Edward also leaves behind a growing legacy of family including nine great-nieces, eight great-nephews, one great-great-niece, and one great-great-niece soon to arrive.
Edward’s life touched many people—family, friends, coworkers, and fellow musicians alike. As many of his friends have shared through their heartfelt messages and memories, he was deeply loved by those who knew him. His intelligence, humor, kindness, and passion for music left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
He will be missed beyond words, and life simply will not be the same without him. Yet the music he played, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave to family, friends, and even the stray cats who found their way to him will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
To Christine, he was more than an uncle—he was like a brother, a constant presence in her life and home. His love, guidance, and companionship meant more than words can express, and the bond they shared will always remain a cherished part of her life.
