Doug Richardson, 82, of Louisburg, Kansas, passed away on May 9, 2026, in Hillsdale, Kansas. Born on December 24, 1943, in Paola, Kansas, Doug's life was marked by steadfast commitment, family devotion, and a deep love for the outdoors.
Doug grew up in Louisburg, Kansas, where he attended school and graduated from Louisburg High School as part of the class of 1961. Following his education, he served with honor in the United States Army National Guard. He was a proud Vietnam veteran.
Professionally, Doug devoted 31 years to working as a lineman for KCP&L, where his dependability and strong work ethic were well recognized. The kids knew from an early age that an evening or weekend caller asking for “Jim” usually meant KCP&L was looking for overtime help. If Doug didn’t want to go in, he would have the kids say he wasn’t home. After retiring, he spent countless hours fishing, cutting wood, attending his grandchildren’s soccer games, and following his favorite sports teams.
Known to many as stubborn, hard-headed, and set in his ways, Doug's personality made a lasting impression on all who knew him. His love for sports shone brightly throughout his life; he played sports all through his school years, and continued playing softball and basketball into his 50’s. His long arms and legs made him an excellent first baseman. He was a passionate supporter of the Kansas City Royals, KU basketball, and the Dallas Mavericks. Doug loved his time fishing and being out on the water in his boat. It gives his family a sense of peace knowing that he passed away doing what he loved most.
Doug married Annabelle Cook, and together they raised two children before their later divorce. He leaves behind his son, Kevin Richardson, and daughter, Kendra Mays, who carry forward his legacy. The family has grown to include cherished grandchildren—Morgan Barrentine, Carlie Cahill, and Lexie Cahill—and great-grandchildren Leighton and Hudson Barrentine, with another great-grandchild, Carter Wilkerson, on the way. Doug is also survived by his brother, Dale Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lottie Richardson, as well as two brothers, Ward and Buzz Richardson.
Doug’s life was one of resilience, dedication, and heartfelt affection for those around him. His story is one of a man who lived on his own terms, cherished his family, and embraced the simple pleasures of life. He will be remembered with respect and fondness by all who knew him. Doug will be missed by many.
