Dorothy Louise Brockus, age 89, passed away on February 28, 2026 at Richmond Kansas Nursing Home. She was born June 29, 1936, in Paola Kansas to Herman and Bertha (Guy) Bergman. The family lived in town but spent much of their summers on their farm south of Paola near Block along the Marais des Cygnes River. Dorothy graduated with honors from Paola High School in 1954. On the recommendation of her principal, she was hired to work at a bank in Paola. She soon met Robert “Bob” Brockus at a dance. They married at the First United Methodist Church in Paola on August 1, 1954, and moved to Ottawa.
They had three children: Gary Brockus (Chris), Ottawa; James Brockus, Ottawa; and Carol Walburn (Darrell), Ottawa. Dorothy has three grandchildren; Janelle Brockus, Leawood; John Brockus (Erin), Olathe; and Robin Machol (James), Overland Park. She has five great grandsons. She has a brother, William Bergman, of Paola.
Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed attending her children’s activities as they grew up. She also loved watching KU basketball, PGA golf, and the Chiefs on television. Dorothy loved animals, especially her cat Fluffy. She was an active member of the Ottawa First United Methodist Church much of her life. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the women’s group. She was a wonderful wife and mother, devoted family member, and friend. She would volunteer and help others in many ways.
Dorothy worked for 23 years at the Franklin County Courthouse in the Motor Vehicle Department. She was known for her kind, friendly, and helpful way, once even receiving flowers from a large company for solving problems with their motor vehicle fleet registrations.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Robert. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother, nieces and nephews. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. At her request, there will be a private cremation burial in Highland Cemetery.
