Doris Marie Elwood, 91, of Bucyrus, KS, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026. Doris was born in Paola, KS to Callie Raymond Porter and Kester Mae Barnes Porter on October 30, 1934. She went to school at Paola High School, when she met and later married the love of her life, Gerald Oren Elwood Jr. (Jerry), on December 30, 1950.
Doris and Jerry brought five children into this world. With tender care, they made a beautiful life together, settling into their home in Bucyrus, Kansas in the spring of 1961. She taught her children empathy and integrity that became a lasting legacy in their lives. She made them feel safe, cared for and supported unconditionally.
Doris was a member of the Bucyrus United Methodist Church and spent many years cooking and serving at the "Wednesday Dinners" that provided lunch for the local farmers as well as many others that came to eat the wonderful food prepared by these amazing women.
She went to work for the Bucyrus United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1973 and eventually became the postmaster at this facility before transferring to the Louisburg USPS where she retired in the early 90's.
Doris was an avid Scrabble player and she also loved all card games and other board games. The family spent many Sunday afternoons gathered around the kitchen table playing one game after another.
Doris is survived by her husband, Jerry Elwood of Bucyrus, Kansas; daughter Linda (Mick) Town of Paola, Kansas and daughter Cheryl (Mark) Dulaney of Bucyrus, Kansas; and twelve grandchildren, as well as eighteen great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; brother Raymond (Alyce) Porter; sister Ruth (Leslie) Bolling; sister Lucille (Jerry) Scherman; daughter Rita Richards; son Michael Elwood Sr.; son Patrick Elwood; and grandson Michael Elwood Jr.
A visitation will take place on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Dengel and Son Mortuary-Paola Chapel. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, beginning at 1:00pm at Bucyrus Cemetery.
