Donald Leroy Howard

It is difficult to tell the story of a life in just a few paragraphs, especially one so full of friendship, love, and service. Dad deserved more in life than we could ever give and now deserves more in death than we could possibly share.

Donald Leroy Howard passed away in Ottawa, KS on October 16, 2025. In his 87 years on Earth, he never met a stranger. Born on March 27, 1938, in Richmond, he was the son of David Benton and Velma Rea Howard. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Most of his friends called him Sonny or Don. The rest of us called him Dad.

The best thing Dad ever did was to marry Sharon James, the love of his life, on Christmas Eve in 1960. The second-best thing he ever did was raise his three children, Donald Benton, Jennifer Len, and Joshua Kohl Howard. And he was loved by all of them.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for six years until 1960. After military life, he got hitched, took a variety of odd jobs, and spent most of his career as a long-haul trucker, where he earned the respect of his peers through hard work and dedication. When he wasn’t driving, you’d find him restoring classic cars, raising buildings, and volunteering to help anyone who needed it. Dad was a problem solver who could figure out how to do almost anything.

Donald Leroy Howard will be remembered not only for his contributions to his family and community but also for the kindness and joy he brought to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones and those he inspired during his incredible journey through life.

He is survived by his wife, children, and all his grand and great grandchildren–Aaron, Makaila, Caitlin, Christianna, Courtney, Hazel, Malachi, and Charlotte. And also one barking dog named Raymond.

Cremation is planned with no services scheduled at this time.
