Darlene M. Reed, cherished wife, devoted mother, and loving daughter, passed away on April 10, 2026, at The University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City, Kansas. Born on October 24, 1960, in Iola, Kansas, Darlene's early years were marked by a move with her family to Richmond and Princeton, Kansas, where she grew up surrounded by the values and warmth that would define her life.
Darlene was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Rossman) Shields. She graduated from Central Heights High School with the class of 1978, demonstrating dedication and ambition from an early age. Her pursuit of education continued at Wright Business School, where she earned a one-year Administrative Assistance degree. This foundation supported a meaningful career working on the assembly line building agricultural electronics, a role in which she found fulfillment through her commitment to quality and precision.
On August 30, 1980, Darlene married Steven Reed in Ottawa, Kansas, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love and mutual respect. Together, they shared countless moments and adventures, including fishing trips and peaceful walks along the trails on their property. Darlene was known for her green thumb, taking great joy in tending to the flowers in her garden and delighting in watching the birds that visited her yard. Decorating for holidays was another way she expressed her creativity and brought joy to her family.
Darlene’s family meant everything to her. She was a devoted mother to her children—Joshua Reed (Stephanie), Adam Reed (Taylor), and Jennifer (Alec)—and a proud grandmother to Anna Reed. Her gentle spirit, kindness, and unwavering support enriched the lives of those closest to her.
She is survived by her husband, Steven Reed; her children and their spouses; her granddaughter; her sister Linda Detwiler; and her brother Gary Shields. Darlene also leaves behind many friends and loved ones who will remember her warmth and grace. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Rhonda Kinion.
A memorial visitation will be held on April 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Dengel & Son Mortuary, located at 235 S Hickory St, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
Darlene’s legacy is one of love, care, and dedication. Her memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of her family and friends, much like the beautiful garden she so lovingly tended.
