Chris Kornhaus

Chris Kornhaus, Ottawa, Kansas, passed away on September 29, 2026, at Overland Park Regional Hospital at the age of 71.

Chris was a lifelong Ottawa resident, graduating from Ottawa High School in 1973. He then continued his education at Kansas State University. He returned home to begin his teaching career at Ottawa Junior High School in 1977, where he taught social studies and coached football, basketball, and track & field. A few years later, Chris transferred to Ottawa High School and taught social studies and economics. He led many athletes during his time as head cross country and track and field distance coach. Chris pushed his students and athletes both in the classroom and on the field, making them believe in themselves and their abilities. Many went on to become state champions and to have successful careers.

Chris was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, and golf. He was always pursuing largemouth bass, quail, pheasant, ducks. and geese. Nothing pleased him more than watching his dogs work in the field, finding coveys of quail, trapping a running pheasant, or retrieving a downed goose.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Shirley Kornhaus. He is survived by two brothers, Kit Kornhaus of Ottawa, Kansas, and Curt (Mary) Kornhaus of McPherson, Kansas.

Cremation is planned, and a private ceremony will be held at a later date.
