Brenda Pearl May, age 72, passed away peacefully in her home in Ottawa, Kansas on January 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 27, 1953, in Emporia, Kansas, the daughter of John Alanzo and Ethel Jean (Gilmore) Hess, she was a remarkable woman whose life touched many.

Moving to Ottawa in 1976, Brenda had a fulfilling career, dedicating 17.5 years to the Franklin County Courthouse in the Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition to her work at the courthouse, she cherished her time as a stylist in her home salon, where she provided haircuts and styles that brought joy to her friends and family. Her passion for cosmetology was rooted in her education, having graduated from Waverly High School in 1971 and obtaining her cosmetology license thereafter. Brenda made friends in her previous places of employment including King Radio and JcAir. Along with her husband, she was also the co-owner of QMC.

On July 10, 1987, Brenda united in marriage with Barry "Ken" Kenneth May in Olathe, Kansas, creating a loving partnership that lasted until her passing. She is survived by her husband Ken, who resides at their home, as well as her daughter Angie McCune (Josh) of Wamego, Kansas. Brenda also embraced her role as a stepmother to Casey Walker (Kirk) and Cecily May. She was proud of her five grandchildren: Hannah White, Cody May (Felisha), Carter McCune, Maggie McCune, and Amanda Brewer (Gavin), who brought great joy and laughter into her life. Additionally, she was a devoted great-grandmother to Logan May, Trinity May, Corey May, and Olen May, all of whom she adored, as well as being a loving sister to Norma Jean Simmons.

Brenda’s life extended beyond her professional achievements; she had numerous hobbies and interests that defined her free time. Known for her culinary skills, she created cherished family recipes that were lovingly documented in the "May cookbook," ensuring her legacy would live on through her children. She was an enthusiastic camper at Melvern Lake and enjoyed family gatherings at their house at Lake of the Ozarks. At home, Brenda found solace in swimming—more accurately described as floating—in their pool. A passionate Kansas City Chiefs fan, she relished the excitement of game days with her family and friends. Brenda most cherished the moments spent with her grandchildren, often picking them up to enjoy weekends filled with laughter and love.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, and her stepson Corey May.
