Arlin Gene Prothe, a cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2nd at the age of 86. Born in Paola, Kansas, Arlin was the beloved son of Corrine and George Prothe. He was a devoted husband to Venita for nearly 60 years. A true patriot, he served his country in the Army National Guard and continued his service as a member of the American Legion #156 Honor Guard.
Arlin worked as a mechanic at the full-service gas station in Paola for over 50 years, often going out of his way to help others by picking up and returning their cars when they needed repairs. He made significant contributions to the community as a Boy Scouts leader for over 30 years, a youth baseball coach, and in various leadership roles at Trinity Lutheran Church in Block.
He served as a volunteer fireman for over 42 years, retiring as a Captain. The fire department members were like an extended family to Arlin. The training sessions on the first and third Wednesday of each month were important, but the lifelong friendships he forged were even more so. Celebrating special occasions with homemade ice cream was a highlight for him.
After retiring, Arlin enjoyed his daily routine of breakfast and lunch with his “younger” friends. In his free time, he loved camping with the Boy Scouts, reading countless books, and cheering on the Royals, Chiefs, and Wildcats. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, never missing any of his children's or grandchildren's events.
Arlin was known for his quiet demeanor, but when he spoke, people listened. He led by example, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to volunteer selflessly. His integrity and loyalty were unwavering, and he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and dedication to serving others. Arlin was a man of faith, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Arlin is survived by his wife, Venita Wilson Prothe; his children, Michael (Sharon) Prothe of Prairie Village, KS, grandchildren, Chace & Paige Prothe, Amy Campbell of Newton, KS, grandchildren, Devin & Myrissa Robertson and Aaron Prothe of Norman, OK. He is also survived by his sisters, Laverne Stringham and Janet England, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Milburn and Milton Prothe.
A visitation will be held at Dengel & Son Funeral Home – Paola on Thursday, March 6th from 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm. The memorial service will be held on Friday, March 7th at 10:30 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Block, with burial to follow at the Paola Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Block or the Miami County Sheriff’s Office Cops for Tots.
Arlin will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory be a blessing.
