Listen to Obituary

Alta Whitehead, affectionately known for her unwavering dedication both in life and in her community, passed away on February 2, 2026, at AdventHealth South Overland Park. Born on September 11, 1932, in Kansas City, Kansas, she lived a remarkable 93 years filled with love, learning, and service.

Alta’s passion for education was evident throughout her impressive 43-year teaching career. She dedicated her life to shaping young minds at various institutions including White Church, Spring Hill, Louisburg, and Johnson County Community College. Her influence reached countless students, leaving a legacy that many will cherish for generations.

She did not just limit her contributions to the classroom. An active member of the Miami County 4H Club, and a participant in the Moshowme and Plainsmen Camping Clubs, she demonstrated her commitment to enriching the lives of those around her. Alta's deep faith was reflected in her active membership at the Bucyrus Church.

Her educational journey began at Wyandotte High School, where she not only excelled academically but also met her beloved husband Charley. Alta was seated in front of Charley in English class. They were married on August 4, 1953, in Kansas City, Kansas, a union built on love and partnership. Alta graduated with her class in 1950 and subsequently earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.

Alta enjoyed hobbies that encapsulated her nurturing spirit, including gardening, sewing, and baking for the farmers market—an endeavor she was proud to be a founding member of. Her warmth and kindness resonated throughout her life, and her absence will surely be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Known for her loving nature, Alta was truly the heart of her family. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Charley Whitehead, daughter Karen Miller, and two cherished granddaughters, Jennifer (Brian) Murphy and Nicole (Scott) Brooke. She was also a proud grandmother to three great-grandchildren, Carrick Murphy, Charlotte Murphy, and Crew Brooke, with whom she delighted in spending quality time.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Minnie Rash, and her sister, Sadie Smeldon.

As we remember Alta, let us celebrate her extraordinary life and the indelible mark she made on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
