Alice Lawrence-McKaig

Alice Lawrence-McKaig, born on May 3, 1949, in Grants Pass, Oregon, passed away on June 27, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas. Her life, rich with experience, kindness, and remarkable achievements, leaves a meaningful legacy cherished by her family and all who had the pleasure to know her.

Alice graduated from Boron High School, Boron, California. She later attended Skadron Business College. After completing her education, Alice embarked on a distinguished career with Santa Fe Railroad, in California; dedicating 25 years to the company. In 1992, she relocated to Paola, Kansas, continuing her work in Kansas City until her retirement in 2014. Her commitment and integrity were evident to all her colleagues—traits that remained hallmarks throughout her personal and professional life.

She was accomplished from a young age—earning her private pilot’s license and delighting in flying her loved ones across the country. One vivid memory cherished by her daughter recalls Alice piloting a Cessna over Big Bear, California, so her daughter could marvel at the snow on mountains from above. With her skill and sense of wonder, Alice found joy in sharing the extraordinary with her family.

Alice’s personality left an indelible mark on those around her. She was known for her intelligence and humility, respected by friends and family alike. As a devoted wife and mother, she inspired admiration and affection. Caring and always full of knowledge, her presence naturally brought out the best in others.

Her marriage to Vernon Andersen marked the beginning of her journey as a wife and mother. Though they later divorced, Alice found love again with Danny Lawrence, until his passing. She later married Dennis McKaig, who also preceded her in death. Throughout her life, these partnerships enriched her family and brought her much joy.

Her passions were as lively as her spirit. Alice was an avid reader and a formidable opponent at Trivial Pursuit. She found delight in the outdoors—whether hunting, fishing, or embarking on motorcycle trips across the country to places like Sturgis and Las Vegas. Watching the Kansas City Chiefs and attending Royals games with family, made life even more exciting. She also collected antiques, tended to her garden, lovingly cared for her flowers, and enjoyed canning and baking. Her affection for animals, especially her cats and dogs, was evident to everyone who knew her. She was a long-time supporter of Best Friends Animal Society in Utah; even visiting the sanctuary in 2016.

Alice was a supporter of the arts and an “OG dance mom,” faithfully attending all of her daughter’s dance, theatre & art activities, providing unwavering encouragement and support. She left a meaningful imprint on all of her daughters’ lives, offering both guidance and inspiration.

Alice is survived by her loving family, including her daughter Mary Beth Andersen; her stepdaughters Heather McKaig and Sarah McKaig; her grandchildren Elliot Mac Grubb and Rebekah McKaig; her sister-in-law Paula Armstrong; her brothers-in-law Darrel (Laura), Douglas (Susan) McKaig; and her niece Lisa Wolff. She is preceded in death by her father Wesley Saum, mother Mary Saum, husband Danny Lawrence, and husband Dennis McKaig.

A celebration of life will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Dengel & Son Mortuary - Paola Chapel, 305 N Pearl St, Paola, KS 66071.
