Robert James “Jim” DeVore, 80, of Newton, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at his home. He was born on June 28, 1931 in Lower Drew, Ontario, Canada. The son of James G. “Shine” DeVore and Olive Holtom DeVore. The family lived in Wyandotte, Michigan for several years before moving to Ottawa, Ks., where Jim attended schools. During the Korean Conflict, Jim served in the U.S. Army. In 1954, he wed Mary Dodds in Ottawa, Ks., they moved to Canada in 1957, living mainly in the Drew and Harriston communities in Ontario. Jim worked for many years in the dairy industry. Jim moved to Longton, Ks., in 2000 where he lived with his partner, Nita Bishop. They had just recently moved to Newton. Jim is survived by his wife Mary; sons Jay, Jeff, Rob, Charles and daughter Susan all of Ontario. He is also survived by his brother Bill and wife Shirley DeVore of Princeton, Ks.; his sister Jane and husband Albert of Ontario, Canada; his long time partner Nita Bishop of Newton, Ks.; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. As well as several nieces and nephews including Jane Bolte of Newton, Ks., and Beverly House of Belle Plaine, Ks., who helped with his care. Jim is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Judy DeVore Larios Peters and Mary Lou Campbell Martin; son Scott; and nephew Jimmie Peters. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday (January 12, 2012) at Dengel & Sons Mortuary in Ottawa, Kansas.
