Joel W. Blackman passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009, at his home after a battle with brain cancer. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2pm. Services will be held at Evergreen Events, 15 W. Wea Paola, KS 66071. Joel was born June 11, 1961 in Kansas City, MO., to John and Shirley (McGinley) Blackman. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1978, and attended Graceland College, and Spartan School of Aeronautics. On April 22, 1989 Joel was united in marriage to Kim Daley in Prairie Village, KS. He and his wife moved to Paola 13 years ago from Overland Park, KS. He was a firefighter for 15 years for the City of Leawood. He was manager of planning, engineering and technical services first at Capital Electric, and most recently at Par Electric of Kansas City, MO. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids, church, boating, golfing, and watching football and basketball with his family. He was a member of Lighthouse Presbyterian Church, served on numerous committees, and also served as an Elder. Joel was preceded in death by his grandfather Frank McGinley and Wendell and Gladys Blackman. Survivors are his wife Kim of the home; Brett and Kyndra Blackman of Stilwell, KS.; sons Brandon and Kyle of the home; parents, John and Shirley Blackman of Overland Park, KS; Sisters Terry Snodgrass of Gardner, KS and Cindy Hester of Bucyrus, KS; grandmother Arlene McGinley of Overland Park; and 3 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Joel Blackman Memorial Fund at First Option Bank, 913-294-3811 which will be divided among Joel"s children"s college fund and the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church building fund.
