JoAnn Rae Smith, 81, of Ottawa, formerly of Pomona, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018, at her home surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Monday March 5, 2018, at the mortuary. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona. JoAnn was born Thursday, April 30, 1936 in Manning, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav and Elsie (Wegner) Schrum. She grew up in Denison, Iowa, moving to Pomona, Kansas in 1957 where she resided for 56 years. JoAnn has lived in Ottawa for the last four years. JoAnn was united in marriage to Horace Jack Smith July 25, 1953 in Denison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 4, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Elsie Schrum; brothers, Harvey, Lester, Arlo, and Louis Schrum; sister, LaDonna Wiese; and granddaughter, Melissa McClendon Mallory. Survivors include her five children, Rhonda Hunt and husband Ivan of Ottawa, Roxanne DeJarnette and husband Dale of Pomona, Marsha Wilken and significant other Kenny Chapman of Ottawa, Mark Smith of Pomona, and LeAnn Ferguson and significant other Dale Malburg of Ottawa; sister, Marge Schnoor of Denison, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Chad McKenzie, Brandi McKenzie, Michael McClendon, Angie McCune, Carmen Ortiz, Nicole Bazil, and Nicolas Ferguson; nine great-grandchildren, Gage and Bodie McKenzie, Emmari and Ezyriah McClendon, Carter and Maggie McCune, Alexis and Xavier Ortiz, and Sadie Bazil; and sister-in-law, Jean McConnell of Lawson, Missouri. JoAnn was a seamstress for H.D. Lee in Ottawa, retiring after 25 years. Following her retirement, she waitressed at JoAnn’s Dairy Bar. She later worked for the City of Pomona as an administrative assistant. The family suggests memorial contributions to Franklin County Cancer Foundation c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
