Florence May “Flo” White, 79, of Denton, Texas, formerly of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 30, 2015, at Denton Regional Medical Center. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Friday, November 6, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 7, 2015, at the mortuary. Interment to follow at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Flo was born Tuesday, September 1, 1936, in rural Franklin County, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar and Effie (Walker) Arnold. Flo was united in marriage with Donald LeRoy White June 1, 1958, in Ottawa, until his death January 3, 1996. She later moved in 2012 to Denton, Texas and lived at the Dogwood Retirement Community. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1954. She continued her education at Ottawa University, graduating in 1958, with a bachelor of arts in education. Flo immediately began her teaching career at Princeton Elementary. She graduated from University of Kansas in 1974 earning a masters of science with specialized credentials in the areas of reading and learning disabilities and a masters of science in psychology. She taught in the Ottawa school district and Central Heights schools for many years as a learning disability specialist. Survivors include her three children, Tab White and wife Susan of Ottawa, Jacquelyn White and spouse Ken Bohnert of Topeka, and Michelle White-Heon and husband Richard of Oak Point, Texas; six grandchildren, Trenton White, Lauren White, Mikala Heon, Nikole Heon, and twins, Holly and Heather Heon; and siblings, Rosie Good and husband Bill of Ft. Scott, Lytle Arnold of Ottawa, and Wendell Arnold also of Ottawa. She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Effie Arnold; and brother, Joe Arnold. Flo was a devoted wife and mother raising her family and also being involved in a very active public life. She worked in various reading and learning diagnostic positions, including classroom teaching, in the Ottawa school district until her retirement while at Central Heights in May 2002. Flo was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Garden Club, ADK Sorority, PEO Sorority, Daughter of the American Revolution, and the Ottawa Soroptimist. She was a volunteer for the Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Convention and Visitors Bureau, which were especially fulfilling, and the Franklin County Historical Society. She was very active in the Kansas Republican Party, once holding an officer position. She loved her family and friends, always being active and enjoying life. She liked to play Bridge and enjoyed gardening. During her years at the Dogwood Community in Denton, Texas, she introduced many residents to Bridge and has left a formidable Bridge club in the area.
