Charles M. Newby, 85, of Ottawa, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 8, 2019, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., Friday, prior to service hour. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, with military honors by the United States Coast Guard. Charles was born May 16, 1933, in Ottawa, the son of Clyde and Freda (Hume) Newby. He lived in various locations during his career including Boston, Massachusetts; Point Judith, Rhode Island; Saint Petersburg and Marathon, Florida; Eureka, Big Sur, and Monterey, California. In 1973, Charles returned to Ottawa. He graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1951. Charles was united in marriage to Doreen Smith November 27, 1957, in Hollywood, Florida. She survives of the home. Other survivors include children, Kellee Petersen (Tony) of Racine, Wisconsin and Scott Newby (Elizabeth) of Olathe, Kansas; four grandsons, Kyle, Ryan, Dylan and Ayden Newby all of Olathe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Frances Madden and Carolee Weese. Charles served 20 plus years in the Coast Guard as a Boatswain’s Mate, retiring in 1973 as Master Chief Petty officer. He worked with Franklin County Rural Water District 5 in system maintenance from the mid-1970s to early 1980s. Charles also worked with the Ottawa Bus Service as a bus driver and later with USD 290 from the mid-1980s to 2012. Charles was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He liked KU basketball and football, KC Royals, and having a vegetable garden being known for his generosity in sharing tomatoes. Above all, Charles loved spending time with his family and having special times with his grandsons.
