Bernice D. Rockers, 97, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015, at Ottawa Retirement Village. A rosary will be said at 6:30 P.M., Thursday, August 6, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, followed by a family and friends visitation at 7:00 P.M. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 7, 2015, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Scipio, Kansas. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery, Scipio, Kansas. Bernice was born Tuesday, May 7, 1918, in Anderson County, Kansas, the daughter of John and Anna (Steinbacher) Strobel. She was a near lifelong resident of Anderson County, mostly in Scipio until moving to Ottawa in November 1996. Bernice attended schools in Anderson County. She was a homemaker and worked eight years as the site manager at Mid-America Nutrition in Garnett. Bernice was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church of Scipio, Daughters of Isabella, St. Boniface Altar Society, an Oblate of the Ursuline Sisters, a 3rd Order Lay Carmelite, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ottawa. Bernice was united in marriage with August H. Gus Rockers July 12, 1941, at San Luis Obispo, California. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Strobel and son, James J. “Jimmy” Rockers. She is survived by sons, Jerry Rockers and wife Connie of Lawrence, and Leonard “Lee” Rockers and wife Anne of Overland Park; daughters, Rosemary Derstler and husband Jim of Dallas, Texas, Joann Nicholson and husband Ron of Olathe, and Linda Hermreck and husband Dale of Ottawa; sister, Hilda Patton of California; grandchildren, Brian Rockers and wife Ashley, Brett Rockers and wife Joy, Jason Derstler and wife Jill, Nicole Norwood and husband Blake, Emilee Katzer and husband John, Dr. Lindsay Nicholson and husband Mark Kieffer, Christopher Hermreck and wife Alyssa, and Stephanie Hermreck; and eleven great-grandchildren. She loved and enjoyed her family hosting many holidays, birthdays and anniversary dinners at her home on the farm. She loved to cook, grow flowers and have a vegetable garden.
