Obituary for Don K. Burroughs
Don K. Burroughs, 81, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Richmond Healthcare & Rehabilitation.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 4, 2017, at the First Christian Church. Cremation will follow.
Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Friday, February 3, 2017, at Dengel & Son Mortuary.
Private inurnment will be held at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas.
Don was born Saturday, January 25, 1936, in Williamsburg, Kansas, the son of Howard F. “Shorty” and Lois (Severns) Burroughs.
He grew up in Williamsburg moving in 1959 to Ottawa.
He graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1954.
Don served in the United States Marines Corps from June 15, 1954 until June 14, 1956, attaining the rank of private first class and he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Don was united in marriage to Ruby F. Wood December 27, 1959, in Paola, Kansas. She survives of their home.
Other survivors include his three children, Lori Skilling and husband Wes of Vassar, Lance Burroughs, Sr. and wife Kim of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Todd Burroughs and wife Lynnett of Williamsburg; and eight grandchildren, Lance Burroughs, Jr., Melissa Burroughs, Dustin Myers, Devon Myers, Julia Burroughs, Seth Burroughs, Cass Burroughs, and Ely Burroughs; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard “Shorty” and Lois Burroughs.
Don was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee and chairman of the board; Williamsburg Anchor Lodge 224, A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free & Accepted Masons); Williamsburg Sadana Chapter 194, Order of the Eastern Star; Ottawa Jaycees, where he served as president; Kansas Jaycees, where he served as vice president and a member of Jaycees International Senate, and the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president and received their Distinguished Service Award.
He was the broker at Burroughs Real Estate & Insurance from 1972 to 1985; marketing agent at Federal Land Bank from 1985 to 1988; and the branch broker for Crown Realty from 1988 to 2014, all of Ottawa.
Don enjoyed hunting, coaching youth baseball, youth basketball and football for 25 years.
